Why Buyers Choose Pacific Grove: Walkable Coastline, Links Golf & PGUSD

What makes Pacific Grove stand out on the Monterey Peninsula: Ocean View Boulevard, Jack Neville's oceanfront back nine, Point Pinos Lighthouse, and PGUSD.

Sitting on the northern tip of the Monterey Peninsula where Monterey Bay meets the open Pacific, Pacific Grove began in 1875 as a seaside retreat and has kept its walkable, small-town feel ever since. Here you can walk the shoreline at sunrise, play nine holes beside the West Coast’s oldest working lighthouse, and be back on Lighthouse Avenue in time for coffee.

Here are the three pillars that draw buyers to Pacific Grove — along with the official sources to verify each detail for yourself.

1. The Coast at the End of Your Street

Because the ocean wraps around Pacific Grove on two sides, miles of public shoreline sit within a short walk of residential blocks:

  • Lovers Point to Asilomar State Beach: Ocean View Boulevard and Sunset Drive trace the water past tide pools, rocky coves, and coastal dunes.
  • Point Pinos Lighthouse (1855): The oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast, still housing its original Fresnel lens.
  • Monarch Grove Sanctuary: Free and open to the public on Ridge Road, where overwintering monarch butterflies cluster in the eucalyptus and pines from roughly October through February.
  • Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Station (1892): The oldest marine research laboratory on the Pacific Coast.

Pacific Grove owns its own oceanfront 18-hole course. Chandler Egan designed the wooded front nine in 1932, and Jack Neville — the original designer of Pebble Beach Golf Links — laid out the back nine across the coastal dunes in 1960 right around Point Pinos Lighthouse. Walkers are welcome, deer regularly cross the fairways, and Del Monte Forest courses (Spanish Bay, Poppy Hills, and Pebble Beach) are just minutes through the gate. 3. One Town, One School District (PGUSD)

Pacific Grove runs its own Basic Aid public school district, Pacific Grove Unified School District (PGUSD), serving roughly 1,800 TK–12 students across five schools (Robert Down Elementary, Forest Grove Elementary, Pacific Grove Middle, Pacific Grove High, and Community High) covering Pacific Grove and parts of Pebble Beach.

Elementary school assignment depends on a property’s location relative to Sinex Avenue. You can review the district’s mission, schools, and boundary information directly at pgusd.org and cityofpacificgrove.org, and always confirm attendance boundaries with the district before submitting an offer.
